Day 3: Eyeball Partners

 

Goal:

Encourage students to think deeply during structured conversations 

When:

During small and whole group instruction, intervention time, or bell ringer (If done during small group, an Eyeball Partner should be across the table.)

Materials:

  • Paper and Pencil/Dry Erase Boards and Dry Erase Markers
  • Timer
  • Content*

* Use content suggestion or you may use content of your choosing. Just be purposeful!

Instructions:

  1. Write a value on the board or give the students a problem to complete on paper or on a dry erase board.
  2. Set a timer for 30-60 seconds.
  3. When you say go, students will have 30-60 seconds to complete the task independently.
  4. When the timer goes off, have students close their eyes. 
  5. When they look up, the first person they lock eyes with will be their Eyeball Partner.
  6. Eyeball partners will stand together and discuss answers. The first partner speaks for 1 minute and the second partner speaks for 1 minute.
  7. Monitor and ask questions to increase critical thinking.
  8. Students return to their desks when time is up.
  9. Take time to clear up any misconceptions and students can share interesting conversations.
